Swung Over

To all of you who are still recovering from the UNMITIGATED AWESOME that was Sunflower Swing: I feel you. The weekend packed enough fun, exhilaration, competition, enlightenment, and comradery that it pushed this week's newsletter back TWO DAYS!

If you were a part of the event, THANK YOU! The event organizers can proudly declare this year our MOST successful Sunflower Swing, in large part due to great attendance by local dancers. Additional thanks to go our many volunteers and hosts. You guys rock!

If, like me, you are desperate to relive the event as you transition back to your "real life," take solace in the Facebook albums for

Friday Night's Dance
and
Sunday Night's Dance

And feast your eyes on the videos of

Competitions
60 Second Showdown
Special Project
Performances

That'll have to keep you going until next year.

May the Fourth be With You (and other things)

Make sure you show up for the first Swingin' Sunday this month, because we have a fun new competition to try: May the Fourth be With you. Get it? May the 4th? SUNDAY, May the Fourth? Ok, that's all the hints you get!

We'll also have our usual week night dances starting TWO DAYS FROM NOW with Dance Night at Spangles. On the 21st, we'll have Dance Night at the Wright Brothers. Come on out, get some food and drinks, and get your dance on!

Good to know:

Any time a WSDS member brings a new dancer to Swingin' Sunday for the first time, both people get in for half price! That's a grand total of $5 for two people. You won't find a better deal than that anywhere.

We Need YOU:

The WSDS is looking for volunteers to help us manage Sunday nights! If you've been dancing with us for a while, and would like a chance to give something back to the scene, please email us and let us know! We will really appreciate your help. There might even be a hug in it for you.

More Swing Dancing in Wichita:

If you want to take your swing dancing to the next level, check out the Lindy Bombers! This local dance club has been meeting every Monday evening for years, working on swing dance vocabulary, technique, and musicality. Let the final countdown BEGIN! Sunflower Swing will begin in a mere FIVE DAYS with our Friday night dance, at 8pm in our usual location. The Friday night dance will include demos from our instructors, a Jack & Jill competition featuring many of our out-of-town guests, a new performance routine from the Shiny Stockings, and a Strictly BATTLE competition during late night.

Dancing begins at 11am on Saturday, when we'll all meet up at the Warren Square downtown for an outdoor social dance. Elective classes will then run from 2-4pm at Care to dance. Saturday night, we'll hit the dance floor again at 8pm, with breaks for Wichita's legendary 60 Second Showdown, Jungle Madness, and the Chicken Sandwich competition!

On Sunday, classes will run from 10:30am-3:30pm (with a lunch break), and of course we'll be dancing Sunday night as usual!

If you haven't registered, and you now find yourself wishing you had, DO IT! It's not too late! You can also visit the event website to check out a la carte pricing if you just want to come to a dance or two.

April Classes & Events

Good morning dancers! Although Sunflower Swing is FAST approaching, there's still plenty of dancing to be had before the event. Of course there's Swingin' Sunday tonight, then this Wednesday we'll be dancing at the Wright Brothers, and NEXT Sunday is our Slow Jamz night to give all your Blues students a chance to try it on the social floor. Here's this month's flyer for a quick reference:

TWO Weeks til Suflower Swing!

T-SHIRTS ARE IN! And boy, are they sweet. If you keep an eye out, I'd wager you'll spot a couple of our mot enthusiastic event organizers wearing theirs tonight! If you end up kicking yourself for not ordering one, there is a single ray of hope: We have two unclaimed mediums, and an unclaimed large. Snap yours up by paying at the front desk tonight!

The website has been updated with detailed class information. You ought to check it out, becuase we are trying something new and different for classes this year. Workshop attendees will be able to choose 3 electives from an enticing menu of choices for Saturday afternoon. Then, on Sunday, everyone will take a pre-determined schedule of classes in "crews." Each crew will take at least 1 section of class with each OTHER crew, so there will be a lot of opportunity to mix with our out-of-town guests. This also means we'll be dispensing with the oft-flawed audition process that can ruin an event for even a seasoned dancer.

Did I mention that the crews have simply FABULOUS names? Check these out:

The Whackadoo Wallabies
The Preposterous Platypi
The Loquacious Lynxes
The Outrageous Okapi
The Mischevious Mongeese

Take a look at the funny section to get to know these mascots.

And, to complete the weekend experience for each crew: There will be a special project on Sunday. I can't reveal too much here, but it WILL be fun and there WILL be a reward at stake!

So, solo Blues dancing is a thing. Watch the delightful Ksenia Parkhatskaya in an impromptu demonstration in this  video. (Give it a minute - she takes some time to find her groove. It's worth the wait.)

See you next week!
