New Sunday Class Format Beginning in August

Good morning dancers! There is an exciting change taking place in the WSDS next month. We are making some improvements to the Sunday night class format. We think these changes will make everyone even happier with the Swingin' Sunday experience. In a nutshell, what we're going to do is present a wider variety of material to our new dancers, and a more nuanced experience for our intermediate and advanced students. To learn the details behind the plan, read on!

As you know, our current class format features two hour-long monthly series classes that run from 6:30-7:30, and the drop-in intro to swing class  from 7:30-8:00. None of that basic structure is changing, however some of the class content IS.

For  a couple of years now, we've been offering Beginning Lindy Hop every month, with a rotating cast of intermediate classes in the back room. There are many advantages to this format, the greatest of which is the fantastic generation of new Lindy Hoppers that has grown out of the Beginning class. However, we want to offer today's new dancers more options. Starting in August, the BEGINNING lesson will be the home of our rotating cast of Swing styles, and the Intermediate class will be more constant.

Beginner classes will now include months of Charleston, Balboa, Blues, Collegiate Shag, and our old favorite, Lindy Hop. In previous years, new dancers would have to take at least one month of Lindy Hop before trying any of those other styles, but that won't be the case anymore. As always, however, the Beginner classes will be designed to build knowledge over the whole month, so we will advice students to enroll for a month where they can attend every week.

The Intermediate class will now be a more accurate representation of what social Swing dancing is really like. Each month will feature a wide variety of material and may include more than one dance style. There will be lessons in technique, new moves, variations, and musicality, all within a context a bit broader than a single style of Swing. Intermediate and advanced dancers, you're going to love it!

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email us and we'll be happy to answer them. And don't forget to sign up for August classes tonight! It'll be your last chance to try Beginning Lindy Hop for a while, so if you're new, get on it. And for all our experienced dancers, sign up for the new Intermediate Experience before you get left behind!

Outdoor Dance in Old Town This Wednesday

We will be in the Warren Square in Old Town this Wednesday, July 30th, from 8-10. Come on out to enjoy some DJed tunes provided by WSDS Vice President Megan Pfieffer. Show off your dancing skills to the passers by! (And trust us, the passers by are easily impressed.)

Ambassador of Swing T-Shirts Ordered

Thank you to everyone who ordered an "Ask Me to Dance" shirt. They are officially on their way! The t-shirts should arrive by August 1st. With any luck, they'll be early and we can wear them to the dance in Old Town on July 30th!

If you haven't ordered a t-shirt, and would like to, it's not too late. Contact WSDS Vice President Megan Pfieffer to place your order.

Wearing the t-shirt lets people know you WANT to dance with them, so they don't have to feel shy about asking you on a Sunday night. Wearing it out around town shows the public that you, yes YOU know how to Swing dance in Wichita, and invites them to ask you how they can get involved. We'd love to see this t-shirt become the new black.

We're charging $20 per shirt, which is what we need to pay for getting them printed. This isn't a profit-generating sale. Become an ambassador of Swing today!

More Swing Dancing in Wichita:

If you want to take your swing dancing to the next level, check out the Lindy Bombers! This local dance club has been meeting every Monday evening for years, working on swing dance vocabulary, technique, and musicality. The Lindy Bombers can also put you in touch with the Shiny Stockings and Five Moes Named Guy, Wichita's solo-jazz troupes. And, if you're REALLY motivated, the Lindy Bombers are also your gateway to Hot Rhythm Revival, Wichita's competitive swing dancing team. There are lots of options out there, come check them out!

WSDS Dancers Make Audience Happy at Sunflower Dance Festival

Good afternoon, dancers!  Take a second to re-read that headline, because chances are you thought it was about Sunflower Swing. NOPE! As odds would have it, the American Country Dance Association hosted an event in Wichita called the Sunflower Dance Festival this weekend. You know what they say about great minds! Unlike our Sunflower Swing, this event featured many different styles of dance, including Waltz, Nightclub, Two-Step, East Coast Swing, and West Coast Swing. The unifying variable was the style of music it was all danced to: country. It was a country lovers dream come true.

Wichita's own Lindy Bombers received an invitation to perform at the event just last week. Eager to share the dance we love with a new audience, they happily accepted. Feverish last-minute practices ensued, and the resulting performance last night was a hit!

It's always illuminating to see what a non-Swing dance crowd loves about a Swing routine. In this case, judging from crowd noise, they love guys dancing solo, and aerials! With any luck, we'll see some of the members of that audience tonight as they come see what Swing is about for themselves.

Swing Night at the Wright Brothers this Wednesday

Good afternoon, dancers! This coming Wednesday will be a special edition of Swing Night at the Wright Brothers. Believe it or not, it's been a WHOLE YEAR since we started dancing there on the third Wednesday of each month! Come celebrate the anniversary with DJ Evan Borst and the Wright Brothers Staff, who have graciously hosted us these last twelve months. Remember, this event is fro dancers 21 and over.

For more family-friendly dancing, you can look forward to dancing in Old Town on Wednesday, July 30th!

In the meantime, there is of course SWINGIN' SUNDAY! Come dance with us tonight, and remember that you can always stay on top of the month's schedule by following us on Facebook, and by grabbing yourself a copy of this flyer at the front desk on Sunday night:

Become and Ambassador of Swing

Do you remember your first Swingin' Sunday? Maybe you came with a friend, or a date. Maybe you braved it alone. Regardless, odds are you felt a little bit like an outsider when you saw our community for the first time. It's only natural. But the WSDS wants to make our newcomers feel as welcome as possible! We want them to keep coming back, and to take classes, so we can grow our scene and have ALL the dance partners! You can help this effort (and look cool doing it) by becoming a WSDS Ambassador of Swing.

Ambassadors will make it clear that they welcome the company of newcomers by donning the Ambassador's uniform:
