Weekly News October 30th

Hello dancers! It's almost November and we have some very exciting events coming up!

THIS WEEK
Saturday - If candy isn't your thing and you would love to get some dancing in, then the studio is the place to be. Harry is throwing his own Halloween party, featuring the Dave Kenny band! Live music and rock & roll should make for a great evening. Doors open at 8, band will start at 9. If you're a WSDS member it's only $8, everyone else pays $10 to get in.

Sunday - Dance card Sunday! That means door prizes to kick off another great month of dancing!

CLASSES
This month we're having Janet expand your east coast vocabulary. We'll be featuring Advanced East Coast Swing all month! It'll all look like this:
Upstairs:
6:30 - Beginner Swing I
7:15 - Beginner Swing II
Downstairs:
6:30 - Intermediate Lindy Hop
7:15 - Advanced East Coast Swing

Finally, in December we have a special treat. Swing Dance Hall of Fame member Harry Reese is once again coming to Swingin' Sundays to teach West Coast Swing. You don't want to miss the chance to pick up this versatile, fun dance. The schedule will go like this:
Upstairs:
6:30 - Beginner Swing I
7:15 - Beginner Swing II
Downstairs:
6:30 - Intermediate Lindy Hop
7:15 - West Coast Swing

LIVE BANDS
Only two months left in the year but still several great live music opportunites for you.....

November 10th - This is an extra special treat. It's a Swing Night at the Shadow, but instead of DJ'd music, we'll feature the stylings of Cool Blue! Yes, it's still at 550 N. Rock Road. Yes, it's still all ages welcome. Yes, it's still FREE. Yes, it's still guaranteed to be a fun evening. Yes, you need to be there.

December 13th - It's our Christmas Party! Among other things I want to highlight that we'll be hosting what is easily the best band you'll hear in the studio all year. Direct from California, the Dave Stephens Swing Orchestra will be playing for three hours. That's right, the band starts early at 7, so don't be late!

WORKSHOPS
November 14th - The Lindy Bombers are giving you a dance workshop that is cheap and filled with fun new stuff to add to your dancing! It's at the dance studio, here's the schedule:
10 - Challenging Charleston - Just what you think, some exciting patterns to put some kick in your partner charleston
11 - Mind Blowing Moves - Let's expand your lindy hop and your mind, with the powerful drug of dance
12 - Hustle and Flow - Everything's better smooth, including your dancing! We'll focus on the flow in this class.
Classes are $7 each or $15 for all three!

BIG EVENTS
A lot of bang left for your buck in 2009:

November 15th - SOCKHOP! Ronnie Choy is back to DJ you back to a better time of malt shops, greased hair, and poodle skirts. It's bound to be a magical evening you won't want to miss, so dress the part and enjoy yourself!

December 13th - Christmas Party! Info in the Live Band section, but also be aware there will be door prizes, and MEMBERS GET IN FREE! It's our Christmas gift to you.

December 31st - New Year's Eve party! We'll have food, dancing, and the Dance Man Ronnie Choy! Come dance in the New Year with us. Party will get started at 9 PM and run until 1 AM. More info to come soon, but mark your calendar (as if you could forget the date!) it's going to be a very fun time.

It's basically November, and you still have Live Bands, Workshops, and some of our biggest events of the year to look forward to before 2010! Your board meets in the middle of November, so we'll have some exciting news about 2010 to add in here coming soon!

Dance at the Shadow Tonight!

Hello dancers! Thanks to everyone who braved the rain and came out for the Halloween Party last Sunday! If you missed it don't worry, you have a chance to get your daning in tonight. That's right, it's another Swing Night at the Shadow! Come on down to 550 N. Rock Rd tonight from 6-9 PM. We'll be dancing, food and drink will be available, and it won't cost you a dime to get in the door. Yes, it's free, and all ages are welcome. So come relax after work with an evening of food, friends, fun, and even a little dancing.

Weekly Update - 10/23

Hello dancers! Thanks to everyone who came out last week for another great Swingin' Sunday, you're the reason the club thrives. Once again, a lot of stuff to talk about, and some great things coming up in the next week:
THIS WEEK
Saturday - WSDS's own Austin Freeman is teaching a Lindy Hop Workshop at Care to Dance (1019 W. Douglas). It's a four hour progressive workshop designed to dispell all your fears about Lindy Hop and have you swinging out with style by the end. Classes run from 9 am to 1 pm, the whole thing can be yours for $40. (Classes are $15 each)
9:00 Building blocks to Lindy Hop- Learning the basics to lindy hop.
10:00 Closed position moves: Keep your follows entertained by adding to your dance vocabulary.
11:00 Swingout turns and moves: Moves and turns that will make your swing out look amazing. 12:00 Rhythm and Styling: Come learn a routine that will give you some awsome rhythm and styling to add to your social dancing.

Sunday - HALLOWEEN PARTY!!!! Come in costume, you'll save $1 and get to enter the free costume contest with prizes! We'll feature the Grand Marquis from Kansas City playing live from 8-10 for your dancing enjoyment. Cost is $5 for members, $7 for non-members. Yes, normal lessons will happen, and yes, you'll kick yourself if you miss it.

Tuesday - Swing Night at the Shadow! That means free dancing from 6-9 PM as well as food, drinks, friends, and fun for you! Plus it's free. I can't think of a better way to unwind after work, so I'll definitely be there, will you?

Saturday - River City Jam is playing at The Horn (1255 S. Tyler Rd). Admission is free and they'll play from 9:30 PM - 1:30 AM. They play music from the 60's to today, but promise to blend a little swing in there too. The more dancers show up, the more swing they'll play!

Sunday - It's the Halloween Party with the Grand Marquis! Band starts at 8!

October 31st - Can't get enough dancing and need something fun to do on Halloween? Head on down to the studio, because Harry is hosting a party! Plus, he's having Dave Kenny come out to play. Weekly Dance News - October 15

Hello dancers! As promised, a lot of info for you this week, so I'm taking a stab at organizing it a little differently. There's a lot to be excited about!

CLASSES
Just a reminder, we're featuring Thriller as our 'taster' class this month, here's the schedule:
Upstairs:
6:30 - Beginner Swing I
7:15 - Beginner Swing II
Downstairs:
6:30 - Intermediate Lindy Hop
7:15 - THRILLER

In November we'll be featuring Advanced East Coast. Feeling pretty good about the material in the upstairs lessons, want to add some exciting new stuff to your dance repetoire? Then this is your month, as Janet is compiling a mess of moves to have you dancing in style!

In December we're proud to bring back West Coast Swing. Taught by none other than Swing Dance Hall of Fame member (and the guy who has his name on the building) Harry Reese, this is an excellent chance to get exposed to a versatile, fun dance. No matter what type of music you like, chances are good you can West Coast to it! So come on out and learn a dance you'll be able to do for almost any occasion.

LIVE BANDS
You lucky dancers, we have at least one live band every month for the rest of the year! Here's the rundown:
October 25th - It's our Halloween Party! The Grand Marquis are making the trek all the way from Kansas City to help you swing out in spooky style. We'll also have our free costume contest, so get in the spirit and get in that costume (everyone in a costume gets in for $1 off) !

EXTRA DANCES
You can get into the Halloween spirit early this Saturday at the Old Town Ballroom. They're hosting a costume party from 7:30 - 10:00 PM. It's $10, which gets you dancing, food, dance lesson, beverage, and an evening of fun. Best costumes will win prizes, and if you've never been to the Old Town Ballroom this is your night, first time guests are free!

Look alive on the 25th of October, Swing Night at the Shadow is back! Don't miss your FREE chance to dance!

WORKSHOPS
We've heard you clamoring for workshops, and we are responding! We have two workshops coming up, with a little something for everybody.

Familiarity with the basics is strongly encouraged, because this stuff will have you looking like a pro. Swing Night at the Shadow Tonight!

Hello dancers! We have some awesome announcements about upcoming events for you, but you'll have to wait a few more days for them. For now, remember that you can come out and DANCE FOR FREE TONIGHT AT THE SHADOW! That's right, we'll have DJ'd swing music from 6-9 PM, and it's FREE FOR ALL AGES! They have a full food and drink menu, so why not come out, relax, and unwind from a day at work with some dancing! The fun is at 550 N. Rock Road, hope to see you there!
