Shim Sham Workshop Tonight!

Good morning dancers! It's the last Sunday of a 5-Sunday month, or as we on the Board like to call it, a "Bonus Sunday!" Bonus Sundays are gifts from the dance gods, and this one will not be wasted! Tonight, instead of the regular monthly series classes at 6:30, there will be a single workshop open to everyone! Dancing in Old TownMs. Amanda Elder will be teaching the Shim Sham, a solo jazz routine with roots in tap dancing. Like a line dance, the Shim Sham is a dance large groups of people can do together, while allowing each individual with the freedom to interpret the choreography in their own unique way. Dancing the Shim Sham is a fun way to practice familiar choreography, bond with fellow dancers, and honor the rich history of Swing dancing. We play a Shim Sham song every Sunday night, so come on out tonight and become a part of this Swing tradition!

Students who already paid for the month of June will be admitted to the workshop for free. Drop-in students will be charged the usual nightly price of $6/$8 for members/non-members.

Outdoor WSDS Dance Attracts Attention at Old Town

We had a grand old time in the Warren Square this past Wednesday! A crowd of dancers showed up to enjoy the gorgeous weather and DJ Evan Borst's dancer-friendly set. We made sure to let the passers-by know who we were, and before long we attracted a crowd of spectators!

The best part about this kind of dance is that it gives us a special opportunity to show the public what we do. The people who gather to watch us when we're out in town are all potential new dancers. And the more of those we have, the better! Thanks to everyone who came out on Wednesday, and if you missed this time, stay tuned to the Weekly! We'll be doing it again soon.

Become and Ambassador of Swing

Do you remember your first Swingin' Sunday? Maybe you came with a friend, or a date. Maybe you braved it alone. Regardless, odds are you felt a little bit like an outsider when you saw our community for the first time. It's only natural. But the WSDS wants to make our newcomers feel as welcome as possible! We want them to keep coming back, and to take classes, so we can grow our scene and have ALL the dance partners! You can help this effort (and look cool doing it) by becoming a WSDS Ambassador of Swing.

Ambassadors will make it clear that they welcome the company of newcomers by donning the Ambassador's uniform:

Wearing the t-shirt lets people know you WANT to dance with them, so they don't have to feel shy about asking you on a Sunday night. Wearing it out around town shows the public that you, yes YOU know how to Swing dance in Wichita, and invites them to ask you how they can get involved. We'd love to see this t-shirt become the new black.

We're charging $20 per shirt, which is what we need to pay for getting them printed. This isn't a profit-generating sale. Order yours by emailing WSDS Vice President Megan Pfieffer with your size. Payment may be made in person at the front desk on Sunday nights, or via Paypal. Become an Ambassador of Swing tonight!

Good to know:

Any time a WSDS member brings a new dancer to Swingin' Sunday for the first time, both people get in for half price! That's a grand total of $5 for two people. You won't find a better deal than that anywhere.

We need YOU:

The WSDS is looking for volunteers to help us manage Sunday nights! If you've been dancing with us for a while, and would like a chance to give something back to the scene, please email us and let us know! We will really appreciate your help. There might even be a hug in it for you.

More Swing Dancing in Wichita:

If you want to take your swing dancing to the next level, check out the Lindy Bombers! This local dance club has been meeting every Monday evening for years, working on swing dance vocabulary, technique, and musicality. The Lindy Bombers can also put you in touch with the Shiny Stockings and Five Moes Named Guy, Wichita's solo-jazz troupes. And, if you're REALLY motivated, the Lindy Bombers are also your gateway to Hot Rhythm Revival, Wichita's competitive swing dancing team. There are lots of options out there, come check them out!

Dancing in Old Town this Wednesday!

Good morning dancers! As we cruise through the end of this month, more opportunities to dance are popping up! This Wednesday, the 25th, we'll be dancing in Old Town, in the square in front of the Warren Theater. Music will be playing from 8-10, and it's free to dance! We hope to fill the square with dancers, and give the Wichita public a chance to see what Swing dancing looks like. So come on out, and bring your friends!

Shim Sham Workshop NEXT Sunday

So, have you guessed the theme of the videos in June issues of the Weekly? Go ahead and watch today's video. I'll wait.

Learn the Shim Sham

If you guessed the SHIM SHAM, you're right! If you're thinking "What on Earth is the Shim Sham?" read on!

The Shim Sham is a solo jazz routine with roots in tap dancing. There are several variations of the choreography, with Frankie Manning's version being the most widely practiced. Like a line dance, the Shim Sham is a dance large groups of people can do together, while allowing each individual with the freedom to interpret the choreography in their own unique way. We play a Shim Sham song every Sunday night! Dancing the Shim Sham is a fun way to practice familiar choreography, bond with fellow dancers, and honor the rich history of Swing dancing.

But it's NOT that fun when you don't know any of the choreography. Sometimes on a Sunday night, some new intrepid dancer will join in the Shim Sham as he or she easily recognizes something that looks like a line dance. But, it's a bit more complex than, say, the Cupid Shuffle, and such brave souls usually scamper back to the sidelines in a jiffy.

So next Sunday, June 29th, we're teaching a Shim Sham workshop! There will be no beginning Lindy or Bal classes. Instead, all students are invited to attend this special opportunity to learn the Shim Sham from a pro. We hope to see you all in the Shim Sham lines later that night!

DJ Battle Tonight!

We had great time when our DJs last decided to throw down and best each others' selection of music by CURRENT artist. Tonight, contenders return to the arena to establish whose cuisine reigns supreme! And of course what that really means is that all of tonight's songs will be about food, yes FOOD! Come on out and support YOUR favorite DJ by keeping the floor crowded during his or her sets.

Dance Night at Wright Brothers Bar WEDNESDAY!

Don't miss out on this chance to dance! WSDS DJ extraordinaire Evan Borst will be spinning tunes from 6:00-9:00pm tonight at the Wright Brothers Bar, 6518 W Kellogg.
