New WSDS Board to Take Office Next Week

Hello dancers!

I am proud to announce that a great new board of directors is getting prepared to take office within the WSDS. I'll let your new president introduce you to everyone in next week's news. For now, I'd like to take a little trip down memory lane and revisit my favorite moments from my year as President.

In August of last year, we started the tradition of dancing at the Wright Brothers on the third Wednesday of every month. A lot of effort went into finding such a dance-friendly venue and promoting the event, which has become a great success! Thanks and congratulations to Evan Borst for being the power behind this operation.

Our Christmas party with Branjae and the Swing Sets was so good, dancers traveled from out of state to be here!
Branjae

WSDS dancers did plenty of travelling themselves, representing our scene at weekend-long events throughout the Midwest.

And of course, we threw the best Sunflower Swing to date!

We also launched monthly dances at Spangles and in the Warren Square. We had a handful of SOUL NIGHTS and a few other themed  Swingin' Sundays. The Shiny Stockings and the Five Moes Named Guy performed for us. We updated the new newsletter format, topped 500 Likes on Facebook, and introduced dozens of new people to the joy of Swing dancing. I'm proud and honored to have had the opportunity to lead the WSDS through this year, and I can't wait to see what's next for us!

Falty and the Defects have been in high demand for Swing dance events since the group's formation. You are sure to enjoy dancing to their tunes, so don't miss this chance to get 'em for free!

Useful Resources for Dancers

You probably already know to read this newsletter and check the WSDS Facebook Page for local dance information, but here are a few very useful links for the avid swing dancer:

Swing PlanIt is a calendar of swing dance events from all over the world. The locations are so diverse, Swing PlanIT only specifies which COUNTRY is hosting the events. Don't worry, though, each calendar entry is linked to the event's website with all the relevant details. Swing PlanIt is a great place to check for what might be going on near you when you have a free weekend, or see what events you can hit up while you're travelling.

The swinginstyle YouTube channel posts Swing dance lesson recaps, performances, and competitions just about every day. If you can't make it out to a lot of workshops, this is a great resource for getting some new moves and finding inspiration.

WhatShouldWeCallSwingDance
is a near-endless list of funny pictures and animations that capture relateable moments for Swing dancers. Be careful with this one, it will suck up ALL of your time.

WSDS Dancers Represent at Aviation Museum Gala

Good evening dancers!

The Wichita Swing Dance Society was invited to take part in the Kansas Aviation Museum's Annual Gala on Saturday. They wanted a couple to come out, do a quick performance, and dance with the event attendants for a little while.

Rising stars Brandon Whalen and Ava Johnston were more than equal to the task, impressing the crowd and then jamming with them late into the night!  Several of the attending aviation enthusiasts plan on stopping by Swingin' Sunday this evening, so be sure to show our newcomers a great time!

If you think you might be interested in performing in local gigs like this one, you should check out the Lindy Bombers. The Lindy Bombers meet every Monday evening for intermediate/advanced swing lessons and team practices. Most often, if the WSDS needs performers, it pulls them from this group of dancers.

Shiny Stockings Begin Work on New Number

As you may be aware, Wichita is home to the all-female solo jazz dance troupe The Shiny Stockings. These talented ladies have been performing original choreography at Wichita Swing dance events for several years, most recently at Sunflower Swing 2014.

This month, the Shiny Stockings have started working on a brand new routine that so adorable, so charming, and so delightful that you will not want to miss it! I have it on good authority that the troupe plans to perform it soon. . . VERY soon. So keep an eye out for further announcements, because you will not want to miss it!
