Hello dancers!  Last week was a big one, for a few reasons.  First, we elected new board members!   Here's your current board:

 

President - Missy Hawkins

Treasurer - Evan Borst

Public Relations - Sonya Atencio

Events Coordinator - Corina Tillman

Membership - Marshall Warren

Secretary - Chelsea Rothschild

 

We still nee a VP.  If you're interested in the job, please respond to this email. 

 

Secondly, we had a membership meeting.  We presented how things are going to be a little bit different on Sunday nights starting in September:

 

*We will have a pair of one hour classes starting at 6:30 PM, one upstairs, one downstairs.  These will be packaged in month long segments, to provide a better learning experience for you the students.  Purchasing a month series of class will include all the dances for that month, and cost $20 for members, $30 for non-members.  Students will not be allowed to join classes mid-month, as material will be progressive.  September's classes are Lindy Hop 1A and Partner Charleston

 

*There will be a beginner friendly drop in class every week from 7:30 - 8:00 PM.  This is open to all comers.  Admission for the drop-in class includes the dance that night, and is $4 for members, $6 for non-members.

 

*After classes we will continue to have a dance from 8-10 PM.  Admission to the dance alone is $4 for members, $6 for non-members.  We will continue to collect money late into the dance, so if you come after 8, expect to pay.

 

Feel free to respond to this email with questions regarding the format changes, we'll be happy to answer them.

It's a LIVE BAND NIGHT as we have THE BENDERS playing from 8-10!  Admission will be $6 for members, $8 for non-members.  If you've never heard this band before then be sure to start resting up now, they'll have you moving all night!

Hello dancers!  It's August and with a new month comes new things to get excited about!  First of all, let me draw your attention to August 14th.

 

August 14th marks our annual Board Elections and another Membership Meeting!  I'm attaching a ballot for the election with pictures and election statements.  These are the people running:

The elections are at 7 PM in the basement of the studio.  After the election is the membership meeting, and we have some things we want to discuss with you the membership.  So please make every effort to be there.

Hello dancers!  A couple things in the immediate future to draw your attention to:

 

TONIGHT IS THE DOLLAR DANCE!  That's right, the studio basement will play host to DJ'd music for your dancing enjoyment from 7-9 PM tonight!  All it costs you is $1, feel free to bring a snack to share!

 

SUNDAY IS A GREAT NIGHT TO COME DANCE!  And I even have a list of reasons why:

1) It's your last chance to catch some balboa this time around.  Class starts in the basement at 7.

2) Birthday Jam!  It's a self-explanatory piece of fun....

3) It's the deadline to turn in a nomination form for the elections this year!  Packet is attached...

Wichita Swing Dance Society

Hello dancers!  First and foremost thank you to everyone who came out to support Sunflower Swing 2011 last weekend!  The event was a success and all of you that came out were a part of it.

 

With one big event in the WSDS year complete, another looms in the near future.  That's right, elections.  Everything you see with the WSDS, from the Christmas Party to Sunflower Swing to our awesome Swingin' Sundays is a result of the hard work of the executive board.  Attached to this email is the election packet for this year.  You'll find a list of duties for each office.  If you are a member in good standing, please consider giving your time and energy to keep the club running well.

 

Only self-nominations are accepted, and are due by July 31st.  You may turn them in at the front table on a Sunday night, or deliver them electronically to Sylvia Dalton at sdalton5@cox.net

 

The elections are August 14th, which will also include a membership meeting.  We expect to have big things to talk about for the coming year at this meeting, so please attend!  Not only can you vote on the leaders for the next year, you can provide your input.

 

With all that being said, let's get back to the regular email....

Sunday is the return of the Balboa classes, and Evan and Megan have some more delightful Bal-Swing for you!  Class starts at 7 so don't be late...

 

Thursday night is the Dollar Dance!  That means swing dancing to DJ'd music from 7-9 PM, and all for just $1!  We encourage you to bring a snack to share and help us have another fun evening of cheap mid-week dancing!

Sunflower Swing....

....is only 1 day away!  That's right, 1 day until the biggest event we throw hits!  I'll give you a quick rundown, remember that ALL the details can be seen at www.sunflowerswing.com

 

FRIDAY

Opening dance, 7-10 PM, Care to Dance

We have people registered from Minnesota, Illinois, Arkansas, Texas, Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa, and more.  Come out to dance and welcome them to Wichita!

 

SATURDAY

Classes with our awesome instructors, 11 AM - 4 PM, Harry Reese Dance Studio

We have awesome instructors teaching two tracks of classes for your dancing fullfillment.

 

Main Dance with Grand Marquis, 8 PM - Midnight, Harry Reese Dance Studio

That's right, live band!  We'll have contests with fabulous prizes, a performance or two, and awesome dancing!

 

Late night, Midnight - ?????, Care to Dance

The dancing just won't stop!  Plus we have a same gender contest with awesome prizes!  Don't let the start of a new day be the end of your evening!

 

SUNDAY

Sunflower Swing is coming...

....and it's only 3 days away!  Yesterday I told you about Friday night's opening dance.  Today I want to direct your attention to Saturday evening.  The crown jewel of the event.  Here's what you need to know for your calendar

 

THIS SATURDAY

HARRY REESE DANCE STUDIO

8- MIDNIGHT

 

Now here's why you should've just finished writing it down:

 

The Grand Marquis start playing at 8!  That's a live band from Kansas City that are locked and loaded to get you dancing!

DJ Christian Frommelt from St. Louis will pick up the slack when the band is taking a break!

We have a Jack and Jill Contest, as well as a Strictly Lindy Contest that will feature passes to midwest swing events for the winners!

 

That not enough?  After the dance we'll relocate to Care to Dance and dance into the wee hours of the morning.  DJ Alan Akers from KC will be your guide down a bluesy road of dance discovery.  Plus the Same Gender Swing contest will happen at some point, with more fabulous prizes!

Sunflower Swing is coming....

....and it's only 4 days away!  That's right, your chance to dance for three nights to two live bands and take two full days of classes with 4 awesome instructors is coming up on Friday!

 

So I wanted to remind you all of what you have to look forward to in the days leading up to it.  Friday night we'll be at Care to Dance, 1019 W. Douglas, with an opening dance from 7-10 PM.  We'll have two of Kansas City's own, DJ Oscar Hampton and DJ Alan Akers to keep you dancing all night.

 

We have dancers registered from Minneapolis, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, and of course Kanses, so don't miss out on the chance to be part of our biggest party of the year!

 

Admission to the dance is $5, but you can get into all the dances for $20, or the entire weekend for $70 as a member or $85 as a non-member.
