Wichita Swing Dance Weekly

This Month's Classes: Tranky Doo, a vintage choreographed solo line dance done around the world. Taught by Evan 6:30-7:30 Intro to Swing 7:30-8:00 Taught by a lovely variety of teachers.  There will be additional teachers substituting. Next Month's Classes: Beginning Lindy Hop (No class on 2-7-16) Upcoming Events: January 3rd is Dance Card Sunday.  January 31st is the Birthday Jam Extra Extra! We want to hear what you think. If you have an idea let us know. Got a concern on your mind, lay it on us. We want your experience to be fun and worry free. Inspiration I adore this performance by Egle Nemickaite and Thomas Blacharz. They have filled this dance with simple moves to illustrate the music. When the music is calm, he keeps her in closer. When the horns start kicking, the swingouts really fly. I love that they do so much walking in this piece. Just goes to show that a few basic moves and solo dancing can make for a very entertaining choreography. If you want to up your own style,make sure to check out our very own yearly party coming up in April. We will offer three nights of dancing, two days of workshops, and (knowing us) shennanigans. World class instruction, fantastic live bands and a whole bunch of fun competitions to watch mixed in. Sunflower Swing in your home town. April 15-17th, the best party all year. Fabulous classes and dancing into the wee hours of the morning. Don't miss it! A group of our dancers had the pleasure to dance at the Symphony after party Friday night. The crowd was thoroughly entertained.  Favorite music This week's song is a whole album of Ella Fitzgerald's soothing voice. Vintage Clips:  Check out this fun clip of George Gershwin and cast members rehearsing for a movie. If you swing on down to Century ll today, there is a fantastic 3:00 performance by the Symphony and guests. They will be playing some of the well known Gershwin tunes. Vintage Clips:  Did you know that the classic Hellzapoppin' routine was actually choreographed to a different song than was used in the movie? Check out the clip with the original song, Jumping at the Woodside. The tricks line up perfectly with the musicians solos. If you want to see them live AND take some classes, hop on down to Austin next weekend. It will be worth the trip. Vintage Clips:  Check out Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers singing Gershwin's "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off". To reach this level of musicality, being knowing how to dance on your own is a must. Taking a solo dance class is a sure fire way to practice different moves that you can throw into social dancing. For the whole month of January (all five Sundays), we will be learning the Tranky Doo at 6:30. Taking the 6:30 class is a good window into the classes at Sunflower Swing too. Make sure to check out our yearly party coming up in April.
