Thank you very much to all you fun-lovin' folks who came out to SOUL NIGHT on Sunday! What a blast! I add my personal compliments to everyone who participated in our Soul Train Line, which was my favorite part of the night. We've got to make it a permanent feature of future SOUL NIGHTS!

Nouveau Quintette to Play at Swingin' Sunday Oct 6

Local jazz band Nouveau Quintette, along with a special guest vocalist, will be playing for the WSDS on Sunday, Oct. 6th. Mark your calendars now! This will be the first time we have a live band since moving to our new venue in January. The band will play from 7-10, so keep in mind that we won't have 7:30 classes that night. Also, admission that night will be $6 (members) $8 (non-members) to help pay the band. Check out their sound in this demo recording; it'll have you tappin' your toes!

Editor's Note: Why You Should Travel to Swing

In Wichita, we're lucky to have a Swing scene that allows us to dance at least twice a week for under $10. We have a nice assortment of teachers, venues, and DJs. In fact, the Wichita Swing scene is my favorite thing about living here! But, at least 4 times each year, I hit the road for a 4+ hour drive to go swing dance somewhere else. And if you love to swing, you really should too.

Like Wichita's Sunflower Swing, our neighboring regional communities in Houston, Dallas, Denver, Omaha, Tulsa, and Arkansas all have their big yearly events. They bring in top-notch instructors, the best DJs from the Midwest, and they host huge dances in gorgeous ballrooms. They hold contests and award awesome prizes. So, it's worth the trip just for all of that.

But, beyond all the glamorous trappings of weekend-long events, there's a special community that exists among traveling swing dancers. There's a vibe of happy reunion at each one of these weekends as long-distance friends catch up and rekindle dance partnerships. There's an almost bizarre sense of a home away from home, a self-contained atmosphere that moves from city to city with the travelers. Being a part of that community is something unlike anything else I've experienced, and I can't recommend it highly enough.

Fall is the easiest season for Midwest regional events, so don't miss your chance to jump in this year! This weekend is the Cowtown Jamborama in Omaha. Next weekend is Southern Fried Swing in Greenwood, Arkansas. Sweepin' Swing is the 2nd weekend of October in Tulsa. November will bring us All Follow's Eve in Dallas and the Nevermore Jazz Ball in St. Louis. Pick an event and GO! I'll see you out there :-)

More Swing Dancing in Wichita:

If you want to take your swing dancing to the next level, check out the Lindy Bombers! This local dance club has been meeting every Monday evening for years, working on swing dance vocabulary, technique, and musicality. The Lindy Bombers can also put you in touch with the Shiny Stockings and Five Moes Named Guy, Wichita's solo-jazz troupes. And, if you're REALLY motivated, the Lindy Bombers are also your gateway to Hot Rhythm Revival, Wichita's competitive swing dancing team. There are lots of options out there, come check them out!

Video of the Week:

Cowtown Jamborama is this weekend in Omaha! Check out this video of last year's Jack & Jill competition at the event.

See you next week!
