We had a nice crowd attending dances and classes, making Wichita look good.
If you missed Cowtown, there are still plenty of regional events left this fall. This weekend is Southern Fried Swing in AK. October 11-13 is Sweepin' Swing in Tulsa, OK. Then in November, Dallas, TX will host All Follow's Eve and St. Lois, IL will host the Nevermore Jazz Ball. It's not too late to register! Go, travel, and live it up!
| | | OCTOBER LOCAL EVENTS You don't have to leave town to get your Swing Dance on this fall. October promises many a thrill right here at home! We will be having our first Band Night at Care to Dance on Sunday, Oct. 6th. We'll also have our annual Halloween Party on Sunday the 27th, complete with costumes, contests, and prizes. You won't want to miss it!
| | | Nouveau Quintette to Play at Swingin' Sunday Oct 6 Local jazz band Nouveau Quintette, along with a special guest vocalist, will be playing for the WSDS on Sunday, Oct. 6th. Mark your calendars now! This will be the first time we have a live band since moving to our new venue in January. The band will play from 7-10, so keep in mind that we won't have 7:30 classes that night. Also, admission that night will be $6 (members) $8 (non-members) to help pay the band. Check out their sound in this demo recording; it'll have you tappin' your toes!
| | Editor's Note: On Team Dancing If you're a long-time attendee of Swingin' Sundays, then you've probably seen several team perfomances. Wichita is home to three Swing teams: Hot Rhythm Revival, a coed team headed by Evan Borst, the Shiny Stockings, an all-girl team headed by yours truly, and Five Moes Named Guy, headed by Nick Meyer. Team dancing is one way to take your skills to the next level. It's also a really great way to bond with the other dancers in your scene, and contribute to a higher-quality local community. Teams have practices, not lessons. They dance with specific goals and performances in mind, instead of just generally trying to improve. That means they work a little harder, and get to celebrate a little more when they're successful! I've been a member of Hot Rhythm Revival since 2009, and I started the Shiny Stockings in 2011. I can tell you from experience that dancing on a team is an incredibly rewarding experience. If you're interested in trying it, I urge you to take the first steps! Seek out the team leaders and ask what they're looking for in new members. Ask your dance peers if they're interested in dancing on team with you. I hope to see you on stage soon! Got thoughts? This local dance club has been meeting every Monday evening for years, working on swing dance vocabulary, technique, and musicality. The Lindy Bombers can also put you in touch with the Shiny Stockings and Five Moes Named Guy, Wichita's solo-jazz troupes. And, if you're REALLY motivated, the Lindy Bombers are also your gateway to Hot Rhythm Revival, Wichita's competitive swing dancing team.
