Starting at 6:00 PM, DJ Evan Borst wil be spinning only the most danceable of tunes for your enjoyment. The bar features a dance floor, daily drink specials, and an adjacent restaurant that will serve to Wright Bros customers. Please remember that it's important to buy drinks (alcoholic or otherwise) to support the bar, and that they have a strict 21 and older policy. Dance nights out on the town offer a different environment thatn Swingin' Sundays. You can enjoy a sit-down meal and a few drinks, along with the company of your fellow Wichita dancers. The music isn't lined up in advance, so it's easier for the DJ to take requests. It's also a smaller, cozier crowd. It's a great way to get to know the people you see every Sunday a little better. Check out the photo albums from our first and second times at the Wright Brothers, and be there in person for the third! | | Nouveau Quintette to Play at Swingin' Sunday Oct 6 Local jazz band Nouveau Quintette, along with a special guest vocalist, will be playing for the WSDS on Sunday, Oct. 6th. Marrk your calendars now! This will be the first time we have a live band since moving to our new venue in January. The band will play from 7-10, so keep in mind that we won't have 7:30 classes that night. Also, admission that night will be $6 (members) $8 (non-members) to help pay the band. Chek out their sound in this demo recording; it'll have you tappin' your toes! | Editor's Note: The Importance of Social Dancing How many times have you heard someone say "I can't dance"? How many times have YOU said it? I used to say it myself, even though I always wanted to be a dancer! I think a lot of people are intimidated by the dancing portrayed in popular media. What we see on TV ranges from super-sexualized solo movement in music videos to professionally choreographed routines for top-notch dancers on So You Think You Can Dance to the characature of dancing performed by professionals with celebrities on Dancing With the Stars. Dancing on TV just looks like something normal people can't do. What we never see, and what we never even hear about, is social dancing. Social dancing is what happens every Swingin' Sunday. It's the name for unchoreographed partner dancing in a non-competitive, non-performance context. The really amazing thing about social dancing is that, once you are a competent social lead or follow, you dance with ANY competent partner. It doesn't matter if you speak different languages, come from different continents, and have a 50-year age difference. Social dancing lets you connect with each other and even get to know each other without saying a word. And you know what else? You don't have to be outgoing, athletic, or a musical prodigy to become a competent social parther. You just have to want to learn and be willing to practice. I have a vague impression that in my grandmother's youth, everyone understood what social dancing was, and everyone did it at some point in their lives, if only at weddings and such. But, somehow, the tradition has gotten lost and now, outside the swing dance community, the phrase "social dance" is unknown. People think that dancing means glittering costumes and feats of strength. Don't believe it! Don't sell yourself short by assuming you can't dance. You can, and, if you want to, you can have a damn good time doing it. Come to dance this Sunday and prove it to yourself. Got thoughts? Email me. Chelsea Rothschild | | | | | | | | The WSDS kicks off every month with Dance Card Sunday. Anyone in attendance is invited to pick up a dance card at the front desk and give it to their partners to sign after each dance. When the card is full, it can be returned to the front desk, where it gets entered into a drawing! A handful of lucky winners will receive prizes later in the evening. Pick up your dance card this Sunday, enter to win cool stuff, and use it as an excuse to ask lots of new partners to dance!
