Sweepin' Swing Oct 11-13 in Tulsa, OK

Next weekend, the Tulsa, OK scene will be holding their first ever Sweepin' Swing event. Tulsa instructors Gregg and Rita Robbinson will be joined by Wichita's Evan Borst and myself, Chelsea Rothschild, for a weekend of classes, dancing, and performances. This event promises to be the perfect opportunity for newer dancers in the KS/OK area to get their feet wet with out-of-town events, and for more experienced dancers to enjoy the atmosphere of a smaller weekend workshop. Tulsa and Wichita have been building a nice sister-community relationship over the past couple of years; come on down and check it out next weekend!

Editor's Note: On Dancing to Live Music.

If you've never danced to a live band before, you seriously need to get on that. If you HAVE danced to a live band, and it didn't blow your mind, you haven't danced to the right live band yet, and you need to get on that.

When I first started dancing, I didn't care if I was listening to the radio, a DJ, a band, or my mp3 player. So long as the music had a beat, I was happy. And to some extent, I still am. But now, I have a strong preference for a good live band. The reason for this is one of the cornerstones of swing dance culture: the relationship between the musicians and the dancers. Jazz musicians take care of their dancers in a way no other style of artist does. If you watch videos of performances and competitions with a band in the background, you'll see what I mean. The musicians actually try to make good DANCING music, not just good listening music. They'll taylor their style to what they see on the floor, and even go so far as to make a nice symbal crash as someone lands a cool jump or aerial. And the dancers pay the musiciand back with musicality - carefully controlling their movement to express what they hear, instead of just doing every move they can think of.

It's a special relationship that's exhilerating to be a part of. Hopefully some of us will experience that this Sunday!

The Lindy Bombers can also put you in touch with the Shiny Stockings and Five Moes Named Guy, Wichita's solo-jazz troupes. And, if you're REALLY motivated, the Lindy Bombers are also your gateway to Hot Rhythm Revival, Wichita's competitive swing dancing team. There are lots of options out there, come check them out!

Video of the Week:

Last week, I encouraged readers to think about dancing on a team.! Check out this 2007 video of 23 Skiddo, a Lindy Hop team based in Seattle, WA.
